South Florida Shih Tzu Rescue and Adoption is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving Shih Tzu breed and other small dogs, rehabilitating them in approved foster homes, and taking care of all medical needs, which includes spaying and neutering. We also are trying to educate the public on the responsibilities of being a pet owner, the bond between animal and humans and the link between animal cruelty and human abuse.
Our foster homes are carefully screened and references check. Our foster parents help rehabilitate and socialize a pup so that they can go to an approved “forever” home. Our foster parents take this responsibility very seriously. Some of the dogs have no socialization with people and have no clue on how to be a dog. These pups take extra time and patience on the part of the foster parent. Some of the dogs come into us badly abused or abandoned. They have to learn how to trust people again and that to takes time and effort.
Our adoption process is done very carefully as we want these dogs going into a home forever. We let the prospective adopter come and meet the dog, after references and a home visit has been done, to see how the adopter and their choice of pup relate to each other. Most times it is a match made in heaven but then there are times there is no chemistry, but more times than not another pup will win the heart of the adopter.
In these trying times, money is scarce and the foster parents and volunteers are paying vet bills, grooming and medication out of their own pocket as our the officers.
